To the west coast of Lixouri and 15 kilometers from the town is the historic Monastery of Kipouraion.
The monastery is built on one of the most impressive landscapes of Kefalonia on a high cliff about 90 meters from the sea.
Built in the 17th century and its name is due to the many gardens maintained by the fathers to provide the necessary livelihood.
In 1759 the church was originally built the Monastery Archimandrite of Chrysantho where Petropoulos and dedicated to the Annunciation and the Elevation of the Holy Cross. In a short time created a male monastery, which in its heyday, the staff is 80 members.
In the monastery you can worship the miraculous icon of the Annunciation and the frames of the founders of the Monastery of Saints Chrysanthou, Constantius and Efrosynou.
Also piece of the True Cross has donated to the monastery by the Russian Prince Vladimir Dolgoroukis the year 1862.
In elegant glass bottle is myrrh St. Demetrius Myrrh from the 7th century. You can even worship relics of various saints and the icon of Agia Paraskevi, unique heirloom ruined Abbey of Taffy.
The monastery celebrates:
- On 25 March (Annunciation)
- The Third Sunday of Lent (Cross)
- 14 September (Exaltation of the Holy Cross with solemn vigil and the presence of its High Priest)
- On 26 July (Holy Friday)
The view from the monastery is unique and deserves to admire and photograph the famous sunset.
