MYTHOLOGY

The mythology of Kefalonia starts from the Mesolithic period (10000 - 6000 BC), which were in the area of the island facilities continued in the Neolithic period as well as in EH (2600 - 2000 BC) and Middle Helladic (2000 - 1600 BC). In the area of Skala and Sami have found several stone tools from flint or obsidian. Few archaeological traces left by the first two periods of copper. Intense activity was observed in the Mycenaean period, which testifies to the island a number of domed or vaulted tombs are found in greatest Mazarakata in Metaxata in Lakithra in Kranias deacon and Kontogenada Paliki. The island and the other islands of the region combined - due to the presence of Mycenaean finds - with a large Mycenaean kingdom maritime character, whose name to this day remains unknown. Perhaps archaeologists say, an area of poor metabolisers'' to'' Tomb (in Paliki is the name Taffy). The rulers of this kingdom of reduced their origin in Perseus, the legendary king of Mycenae. As the legend tells us the kings of the Mycenaean Kefalonia claimed the kingdom of Mycenae and for this purpose attempted expedition against the islands with Amfitryona, which took part in Kefalos Thoriko of Attica and Elio from the Marsh of Messinia. Target areas were Tafion and Tilevoes.
The Amphitryon managed to beat the legend donated the island to the two heroes who accompanied him. One of them was Mullet, who said he gave his name to the island (this is one version). Of course this is much disputed as the clay tablets of Pylos refers Cephallenians people'''' or'''' Kefallanians, who lived in western Greece. Livatho where he found great necropolises Mycenaean findings, saying that he had installed Kefalos. The island is also referred to as Tetrapolis the names of the 4 sons of Cephalus. The Struggle included throughout the western peninsula of the island (today Palliki) and was built on the hill or Paliokastro Duran. The helmets were built up in the cove of the lagoon puppy (even today traces of the cyclopean walls) and included the southern part of the island to the west of Enos. The Pronnoi was in the southeast of Kefalonia, Sami was built on two hills, just above the present town and included all the former province of Sami. These four cities were small independent republics and cut their own currencies. kefalonia history, Kefalonia History, KEFALONIA MYTHOLOGY, St. George Castle.
The name of Elio maintained until today in southern Kefalonia, where the area is called session. In black found a vaulted tomb along with other antiquities that period. The shape of the chamber tombs are similar to other tombs discovered in the region of Messinia, in clover, from which it appears to the Mycenaean civilization was in Kefalonia, Zante and Ithaca. As we said in the specialist Spyros Marinatos, acne Sami dating to the Mycenaean period. There dwelt the Haggai, famous hero in pre-Homeric period, moved to Kefalonia from the Peloponnese. There are so many testimonies of that period for the island, in contrast to Ithaca, which has led to too many experts equate the Homeric Ithaca Kefalonia today. It said that King Odysseus and Penelope companion to an old gods of Arcadia. So it is probable that in Kefalonia Achaeans went from Arcadia and moved there the gods and heroes. Moreover, the people called'' Ulysses'' and held Cephallenians Ithaca, Zakynthos, the coast of Akarnania and Sami. The name'' but'' Kefallinia reported by ancient authors (Herodotus) only in 450 BC The Cephallenians then gave their name to Kefalonia (the second version of the name of the island). Kefalonia with its rich mythology, is investigated and discussed until today.
To the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli you can enjoy all these great finds, especially from the Mycenaean tombs Mazarakata of Kokkola and Lakythra. Latter finding small ancient theater in Fiskardo, found accidentally during excavation for the construction of a house.
